Mule team in Ronks, Lancaster County, PA

Mule team in Ronks, Lancaster County, PA:

I was having breakfast with clients at Jennie's Diner, a truck stop in Ronks, PA along Route 30 East in Pennsylvania Dutch country.  One of my companions spotted this mule team behind me on the farm next to us, and I happened to have my camera near enough to be able to take a shot of them from inside the diner.

Brian: How neat!  That's certainly not a sight one sees in the suburbs of Detroit- Thank you for sharing!  :)

Andrew, in that area it's not uncommon to be sharing the road with Amish buggies!

Hey Brian-pretty cool to see that way of life still going on. I was at a stop in PA and a horse and buggy pulled up with a bunch of Amish (guessing) teens all dressed in home sewn clothing as well. It took me aback but was cool to see.

Marco, it's an interesting contrast between how neatly the Amish dress and how messy sometimes the "English" (as they call us) do!

Hi Brian,

Oh my! I would have loved to have seen that.....I wasn't even aware that farmers still used mules.

Thanks for posting such an intriguing photo,

Jo

HI Jo,

Yes, the Amish do still use mules to plow, as they don't believe in modern machinery.  They also don't like to have their photos taken, as  a photo could be considered a graven image - but I hoped the farmboy wouldn't mind since I took the shot from inside a building at quite a distance with a telephoto lens.
