The Manor Shopping Center, located on the west side of Lancaster ,PA on Route 999, the Millersville Pike, is in the process of undergoing some major improvements! This is a great example of an older shopping center being modernized, rather than precious farmland disappearing into new shopping centers.

The McDonald's at the entrance of the shopping center is closed for demolition and upgrading.

The Weis market remains open during construction of a total enlargement and remodeling project. The new addition will house the customer service department among other features, and new locations in the store will boast a brand new deli section and an expanded bakery.
The project is expected to be completed next year. Other interesting recent additions to the Manor Shopping Center have been a Ruby Tuesday Restaurant, a large Guitar Center featuring instruments, amplifiers and musical accessories, and a Dollar General now celebrating its grand opening...

Brian - I really like to see when the commercial space get upgraded. A few years ago some of the shopping area nearby looked somewhat run down but now everything looks good and with the new look more shoppers are attracted as well as tenants.
I have not seen a Weiss store in about ten years they were replaced by Hannaford and Shop and Save.
Jennifer, Weis Markets is headquartered in PA, which may explain why they need to stay competitive. There are many Giant supermarkets that have been upgraded in Lancaster County and surrounding counties, and Weis Markets has been upgrading many of their own as well.
It's good to see some of these smaller shopping centers becoming upgraded and successful again!
Brian,
I'm glad to see them renovating an existing shopping centre rather than developing new land too....if only more areas would take the lead on this and do the same rather than leaving derelict or old shopping plazas sit decaying and barely filled anymore while they move on and build another one from scratch....
Jo
Jo, I totally agree - I'd much rather see old shopping centers improved and renovated, than brand new locations using up our dwindling farmland!
Brian
Brian,
That shopping center sure has changed over the years ... I remember when it included a Joe's The Motorist's Friend, Smitty's Hobby Shop, Acme, and SS Kresege.
Of course, I remember when that was farmland. It is good to see it being revitalized and improved rather than being left to fall apart. I do have to wonder if there will be enough parking there when the movie theater is busy.
The barn was on the Charles Road side of the property, Brian. Probably near the read of the Ruby Tuesday today. I actually remember driving by (I was in my dad's car with him) when the barn was on fire. I remember the Bausman Fire Company's siren blowing and calling the volunteers. It was the first time I had experienced the call of volunteer fire fighters, since I was growing up in the city and protected by the Lancaster fire department.
George
George, thanks for filling in the details. With that description, I'm guessing that the farm house was somewhere in the center of the present shopping center?
I've seen several barns burn, and it always leaves me with a sense of sadness, that something irreplaceable has been lost. A beautiful barn that burned on West Ridge Rd. just outside of Elizabethtown near where I used to live, is now the location of a subdivision, leaving no trace of the previous farm.
