Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia PA

Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia PA

Located on Chickies Hill between Marietta and Columbia, PA, Chickies Rock County Park offers some of the most spectacular views of the Susquehanna River available anywhere in the Susquehanna Valley.

Located off Route 441, the park starts with a parking area.

Walking trails meander west toward the river...

Chickies Rock County Park

Although the river can be seen from Columbia, it's farther away from Route 441 than it appears.  The hike to the overlooks is a little over a mile, uphill but not too difficult.  After you break through the woods, the trail opens wider.

When you get near the river, the terrain suddenly shifts steeply downhill.  Although there are barriers on the Chickies Rock ledge, caution is advised.  Local stories are told about suicides over the ledge, and accidental deaths of people who took unnecessary risks after drinking too much!

Chickies Rock County Park

Chickies Rock was named after the Indian word "Chiquesalunga", meaning "place of the crayfish".  The county park consists of 442 acres.

Brian, Great photos!   Wow!  I feel like I'm there.  But then I look a little to the left of my computer screen to my unbelievably messy desk and it's back to reality!  Nice morning treat, thought!  Thank you.

Good morning Brian,

This looks like a very beautiful and wildish park where nature and the inherent beauty is being preserved. I enjoyed reading this first thing today.
When I was last in Pennsylvania, I was caught in a major rainstorm and had to take refuge at a Country Inn on top of the highest hill in the state...there were flash floods everywhere and bridges were not passable.  Such a beautiful state you live in and your beautiful pictures reminded me of my visit there.

Patricia, for a second, I thought I might have inadvertently included photos of my own desk - LOL!

Jo, I've been caught in one of two flash floods in Lancaster County - you have to be aware of the danger of  driving through water - you never know how deep or fast it may be underneath.  I'm glad you were smart enough to seek shelter instead of pressing on.

Good photos, Brian.  Haven't been to that spot yet.  Drive by it all the time but never can stop!

Jeff, I actually made the trip with an injury, and was quite proud of myself for completing the two mile walk...  If you have the time it's definitely worth it.  Actually, it would be even better if you have someone you can share the experience with!

Jennifer, I do know - you first caught my attention because of your beautiful photos on the Hudson River...

Oh, I've got my camera - that's enough.

I always have my camera - but I would have liked some (female) company that day...
