After 48 Years, Funk's Farm Market, Millersville, PA Closes
Saturday, July 31, 2010, Millersville, PA:
After 48 seasons of fresh home-baked pies, local produce and colorful flowers. Funk's Farm Market opened Saturday for the last time. Many local patrons were on hand to see once more and reminisce about this local landmark familiar for almost half a century.
Employees handed out the last remaining flowers and plants free to customers.
An auction of the remaining greenhouse equipment and vehicles will be held September 8. The 66-acre property is slated for Funk's Farm Village, a mixed-use retirement community. Owner Fred Funk and developer John Hogan indicate that the farm market should be back in some smaller form once the retirement community is built.

It's a really big deal to lose something that has been part of a community for so long.
Charita, thanks for your comment. I was a customer of Funk's Farm Market myself, so I will miss it personally as well!
How prophetic the name!
How are you? This is just another sign of the times....but it doesn't get any easier does it?
Hi Joni,
Yes, the Farm Market is now "deFunk'd", so to speak...
However, this was one business that was not closed for lack of loyal customers (myself included). Rather, the plans call for development of an upscale retirement village, which hopefully will open up opportunities in the near future for construction workers, real estate agents and retirees themselves!
Brian,
What a shame. Unfortunately it is a sign of the times. Looking back in time, there are many places that I have frequented that have closed due to progress and development. I miss these places.
Brigita
I just saw Fred Funk at the Lampeter Fair and told him how much our family missed his Market !!!
Brigita, it's a shame that some long-time family businesses have to be sacrificed in the name of progress. Hopefully the farm markt will be back in some form at a later date once the retirement community is built.
MIke, I hope there are plans on the part of the development partners to bring a farm market back somewhere on the premises in the future!
What a shame, this is the first fall that my kids will miss "pumpkinland" at Funk's; over the past 15 years it has become a tradition for us to go and see all of the pumpkin characters, play, and take home a couple gallons of cider, some fresh produce, and their yummy quiche!
Chris, I will miss it, too. Autumn is a wonderful season for Pennsylvania farm markets, and it's too bad that this one is no longer here.
